Identifying New Psychoactive Substances:
Artificial Intelligence meets Expertise

Project Overview

NPS AImEx is a collaborative research project addressing the increasing analytical challenges posed by New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) in forensic drug analysis.

NPS are characterised by rapid structural variation, high potency, and the frequent absence of reference materials at the time of first appearance. This results in delayed identification, limited comparability of analytical results, and increased workload for specialised forensic laboratories.

Forensic Relevance

Forensic laboratories within Europe and beyond are increasingly required to:

  • Identify previously unknown substances,

  • Provide legally defensible results within short timeframes,

  • Ensure analytical reliability across institutions.

NPS AImEx responds to these requirements by developing AI-supported, method-independent tools for structure elucidation and analytical validation.
